The Snuggie vs. Slanket vs. Freedom Blanket vs. Blankoat

Answering the question Americans really care about!!

Merry Christmas Eve!

I'm in Texas now for Christmas now, of course. Yesterday was literally 74 degrees. And today it's snowing and they're saying it'll be 1 - 3 inches. I don't even know how that's possible! This is a crazy town. And you know what? I'll take a 70 degree Christmas over a white Christmas, thankyouverymuch. Not that I have a choice now, but still. It was nice while it lasted.

Snow day!

Well I survived the thundersnow. They closed parts of the metro, so it was only running in the sections where there are no outdoor stations, so thank goodness I moved from Pentagon City because otherwise I would have been basically stranded. It's a good thing I went to Alaska 2L year because I busted out my Alaska coat and my Alaska boots so I was actually ok. Jeff and I went down to the mall and made a dancing snowwoman (and yes, she looks weird, but the snow was so powdery it was really hard to pack it, so be nice!).

It was really cool down there though, it was like 10pm and totally silent, there was pretty much nobody out there, which never happens. Look how cool!

This is the escalator into one of the metro stations, cracked me up:

It was fun playing in the snow and all, but seriously, I'd be fine if it would be 70 degrees here tomorrow. I don't really need more than a day or two of winter. I think that's about all the exposure to cold that God intended for us.

Friday, December 18, 2009

Apparently we might get 10 to 20 inches of snow tomorrow. I don't even know what to do with that! Do I have to buy canned goods or candles or something? Is the power going to go out? When will all that snow melt? Will I be able to fly to Texas on Monday? So many questions!!

Validated by television

I just watched Jeopardy for the first time in I think years. And I totally still rock that show. Just in case you were wondering.

Today's the day!

Today is my first trial!!  Which is why I'm at work before 7am, sigh.  But I feel like a real lawyer for once!  And as soon as these weeks of madness are over, hopefully I can get back to posting.  I've got some stuff I've been meaning to talk about for a while, including:
*My friend Laura giving up vegetarianism after 15 years and LOVING poultry.
*How Washington DC is going to make all stores charge for plastic bags, so I'm torn between my hatred for paying for things that should be free and my hatred for being required to save the environment.
*How the last episode of Castle I watched had Riley from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Shawn from Boy Meets World, Cutthroat Bitch from House, AND Chloe's husband from 24.
*How people keep telling me I look like Rachel from Glee (well, the last guy said I looked like a prettier version, so I'm going to go with that).

Good thing they did this episode

Poor Grizz!  30 Rock needs to bring back the kidney song, for reals this time.

The whining continues

I'm still at work, it's raining and I don't have an umbrella.  Day keeps getting better.

Tuesday, December 08, 2009

I'm still at work.  I am not cut out for this business.

This is my first experience being back at work less than eight hours after leaving. I do not approve!

My computer totally died, as I mentioned before. My dad couldn't save anything, he had to build me a new hard drive. The last time I backed up my computer was December 2007 so if anyone has any pictures that involve me between then and now, please send them to me! This is one reason that I haven't posted in a long time.

Nothing gets me to post more than being mad and not being able to do anything about it

My computer is totally dead, I'm bringing it home on wednesday for my dad to perform a miracle and save the stuff on my hard drive. So I am computer-less for the time being, which is affecting my posting. Sorry!

So, I've said before how I hate hate hate Bally Total Fitness. I'm still stuck with the stupid membership since I'm done, but I haven't been since October of last year. I did sign up for the membership that lets me go anywhere in the country, so that when I go to Texas to see my parents I can work out, but I haven't done that yet. I figured that Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving would be a good time to go, so I went to check the group classes schedule online to see what they have, but they didn't list any specific schedule for the holiday. I called them up and the front desk lady told me they have NO classes on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. No classes! WTF? My hatred of Bally grows greater and greater with time.

It's "gentrifying"

This happened on my street.  (Mom, don't freak out, my building is much nicer.)

I love it!

I heart San Diego!

Whew, long time no blog! Sorry for the quiet, last week I ended up getting a pretty bad cold and was not in good shape, and then this weekend I went to San Diego for my friend Nina's wedding! So, I have a lot to tell you about.

*Going to San Diego made me really really really miss it. It was 40 degrees and rainy here in DC when we left on Thursday, and then 68 and sunny and gorgeous in San Diego when we got there. And it was like that all weekend (shocking). I really have been on the east coast too long because part of me was waiting to see clouds and rain in the morning when I'd wake up. Now I keep thinking about trying to transfer out there (my firm just happens to have an office there...).

*No offense to my other friends who are married, but Nina must have been the happiest, most excited bride I've ever seen. She was on the dance floor like a crazy person the whole reception, having the best time of her life. It was awesome to see.

*I got Jeff to try Jack in the Box for the first time!! It made me so happy. I've told him all about the awesomeness of the tacos there (as did everyone else at the rehearsal dinner), so I documented his first Jack in the Box taco experience.

And guess what, he thinks they're pretty good. Woo!

*I accidentally got the loss/damage/whatever insurance for my rental car, and I was kind of annoyed with myself for doing so, but then when I turned in the car it turned out someone totally hit the car and I didn't even notice! The parking lot at the hotel was really tiny with tiny parking spaces so I'm sure someone scraped the back of the car and then just ignored it. So, thank goodness I accidentally got the insurance!

*Look how pretty!

Because history + books = badass

Sometimes my work is like being back in law school.  We have an "occasional speaker series," where they bring in random people to talk about stuff over lunch, not necessarily related to law (which is nice).  Yesterday they brought in this guy, who is in charge of the rare books collection of the Library of Congress, and he was awesome.  He has been recreating Thomas Jefferson's collection of books (sold to the US after the original Congressional library was burned in the war of 1812, and then later destroyed itself in the 1850s, I believe).  So he talked about the collection itself, and then about his quest in recreating it.  Out of the original 6000+ books he's down to looking for the last 297 (and he's been doing this for 11 years).  He said a lot of those last 297 are probably never going to be found, but still, not bad numbers.  Anyway, it was really neat and a lot of my friends here mocked me for wanting to go, but his job is so much cooler than ours.  Oh, and he's a Golden Bear, too!  Woo all around.

Two extra HIMYMs...sweet!  Take that, Big Bang Theory.  *studiously ignoring the fact that my tv nemesis, Two and a Half Men, also had two extra episodes ordered*

I couldn't do this and I have opposable thumbs!

Check out this beagle escaping from his pen.  It's a short video, and is really crazy.  I can't believe a dog can do that!  It makes Jamie's escapades seem much less impressive.  But that's probably a good thing, I don't want to have to worry about him climbing down the fire escape or something.

Happy Halloween!

At work every year they do a pet costume contest, so Jamie and his friend Sydney (my friend Laura's dog) decided to enter it this year. They decided to be Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, and then use some stuffed animals to represent their multiethnic children. And yes, they won first place in the contest.

I can only hope that my costume looks half as good tonight.

I changed my mind

Ok, I know that I hate Fall Back and I can't stand it getting dark at 4:30pm and all that...but I can't take getting up in pitch black anymore. My alarm goes off at 6:30 (I don't necessarily get up then, but that's when my alarm goes off...), and it just feels like the middle of the night. This is no good. How to Alaskans do it?? Thank goodness it's only this week left. Then of course I'll be sitting in my office pouting from like 5pm on because I hate working when it's still dark outside, too, but I think it'll be easier. Because this is madness I tell you, madness! Also madness? Repeat of HIMYM last night. Granted, great episode, but still. Good thing it's November sweeps soon!

Childhood delusions

Last weekend we watched All Dogs Go to Heaven, which I haven't seen in a really long time (as you might have guessed), and you know what? It's a really bad movie. The plot doesn't make much sense, the songs suck, and Burt Reynolds was not a good call as voicing the main dog character. It's so disappointing, realizing that it's nowhere near the cool movie I remember from elementary school. Although at least it has the right message, that all dogs go to heaven, because they SO do. (ahem, Matt)

Screw you, DC

I just looked at the weather in San Diego. It's 80 degrees right there ("feels like 79"). I freaking hate this town and I want to go HOME!

All hail our alma mater

I just found our that Tate Forcier went to my high school! What do you know. Yay Scripps Ranch!

Is it wrong that I want this mainly because it's got Reese Witherspoon's name on it?  I mean, the description sounds nice too, so it's not ALL because of her.  But largely.

Monday, October 19, 2009

I got a letter from the Alaska Law Review (my journal in law school) asking for money for the 2Ls' trip to Alaska this year.  The funny thing is, they're using the letter that *I* wrote as managing editor for the journal two years ago.  They updated it, but it's still totally my letter.  I find that amusing.  I sent them a check and wrote on a post-it that I'm glad my letter is still getting some use.

Andy's recent post mentioning Red Robin (I heart it too!) reminded me that I never blogged about one of the biggest travesties of recent memory. My friends and I went down to the nearest Red Robin (a 40 minute drive, totally worth it) for lunch and outlet mall shopping a few weeks ago, and I was so excited because they have my favorite burger of all time there. The Santa Fe: sauteed onions, roasted poblano pepper, guacamole, pepper jack cheese and tortilla strips. It's amazing. And when we got there, after months of dreaming about the burger, THEY TOOK IT OFF THE MENU. I couldn't believe it. I had something else but it was total crap in comparison. Santa Fe, I loooooove you. Come baaaaack!!!! Or Red Robin, you and I have some serious issues.

I looked for a picture of it online but the only thing that came up was a page which lists the calories in the burger. You bet your ass I did not click on that link.

So I email posted this post on Friday night, but apparently it didn't go through, so I'm just copying it in now. Pretend it's Friday night to get the full effect.

I am in the midst of an awesome friday night. I went to go buy a
coffee table off of craigslist, and then was going to meet up with
people to see Zombieland, so I was hurrying trying to navigate stupid
dc traffic so I wouldn't be late. I picked up the table, and it fit
in the car no problem (woo!) But then when I went to leave my car
wouldn't start. I knew car trouble would happen to me sometime, and
it picked a rainy friday night when it's 30-something degrees outside.

I called a tow truck because I think it's a dead battery (and none of
my friends with cars were around to give me a jump) and I found a guy
who will just come and replace my battery (for some ridiculous amount,
but I'll at least have it over and done with so it's worth it) so now
I'm just sitting in my car waiting for him. It's getting cold in
here, too, sigh, and I can't just leave the car because I parked
illegally while I was running in to get the table. So I'm sitting
here with the hazards on, hoping mr. Tow truck man drives fast, and
entertaining myself by blogging remotely. I knew I should have gotten
AAA. At least the neighborhood isn't shady, though!

Caution: whining ahead

The high tomorrow is 45 degree.  High!  45!  And it's supposed to rain (just like it has been doing all day today).  And it's only mid-October.  Kill me now.
I had an awesome dream last night, I'll share later when I have time to properly describe the awesomeness.

Here's my card

In case you were wondering, I'm feeling much better now.  Yesterday I was pretty much back to normal (although I skipped the gym to play it safe), and today I feel totally fine.  Whatever it was hit me hard, but left as fast as it came!  (That's what she said.)
In other news, my journey of becoming a real lawyer continues...Yesterday I finally got my business cards!  I now have hundreds of these things and nothing to do with them except drop them in the "win free lunch" bowls at restaurants (which I already did yesterday, too--I'm not wasting any time!) but it's yet another step to not feeling like I'm faking this whole job thing.  Now the only thing left is to get on the website, which should happen within a month (they have to get the bill from the DC bar before they do it, for some reason).  And then when you look me up you'll be able to find me and not wonder why I'm lying to you about being employed.  My firm is weird.

Sick =(

I woke up with a tummy ache, and I kept waiting for it to go away as the day went on, but it decided not too. I drank tea and water and juice all day, and finally ate some dinner a couple of hours ago (bread and hummus, yum!) but now it feels like whatever it was has lightened up on my tummy and moved to my head. If I hadn't been busy at work today I would have gone home but I had stuff going on so I stuck around. I'm hoping a good night's sleep and I'll be all better by tomorrow, but we'll see. Jeff gets really sick and I'm around him all the time and I don't get sick, then I randomly wake up with something all on my own (at a different time, not one right after the other). What the hell.

The gym I work for keeps making me feel guilty for not being able to spend all my time there.  I just volunteered to teach a class two sundays in November at 11:30 am and the other lady is telling me she needs me at 5pm too.  I'm sorry, but I'm not spending my whole day going back and forth to the gym, and it's not my fault that she's a terrible communicator and never told me she was planning on adding a class at 5 when there already is a class at 11:30 and there'd be no reason for me to think that she'd be referring to something other than that 11:30 class.  Grr!  So I emailed her and told her I'd do one of each, but I can't do it at 5pm every week anymore, and definitely can't do both in one day, but I'm already dreading her response which is no doubt going to be the equivalent of email yelling at me.  She's so abrasive and I just feel like she really dislikes me, so it makes the whole thing a huge pain to deal with.  Sigh.

Apparently our firm's Tokyo office is closed today for "Health-Sports Day."  (a) What the hell is that?  and (b) why don't we have it?

Spoiler Alert!
So in The Office this week Jim and Pam ran off and got married before their actual wedding, to avoid the craziness of what their wedding turned into.  This was deemed the "Best. Move. Ever!" by some people.  But hmm, sounds awfully familiar to me.  Like maybe two crazy kids in New York had their wedding get out of hand and everything go wrong so they secretly got married outside in a garden with just a few friends nearby, and then went back in and had their "real" wedding with all their family there?  That's right, people, HIMYM again!!  And don't you forget it.  Not that it wasn't great when Pam and Jim did it too, but let's give credit where credit is due.

Sun, where are you?

The sunrise is at 7:15 and the sunset is at 6:30. This sucks! Stupid winter.

Speaking of winter, Jeff and I went to Boston this weekend to go see Liz (who is in med school there now) and some of his friends. It's speaking of winter because it's already cold there (although today it doesn't seem much warmer here). Highs in the low 60s/high 50s, lows in the 40s. Ahh, just like winter in San Diego. That's only a slight exaggeration, actually. It was a super quick visit, only about 46 hours total there, but we found super cheap plane tickets so it was totally worth it. And if it were only a lot warmer I'd totally move there, I think the city is so pretty. Maybe I could manage for a year or two, I don't know, but I'm skeptical. But visiting during the fall is great!

Still owe posts on my thoughts on the new tv season, I know. But work has been busy with non-doc review stuff so it's been hard to find the time. Speaking of work, I should probably go get dressed, since I have work today (suck it, federal employees with the day off!). But, we do get a jeans day today at least, so that's something! I just barely remembered too, I'd be so mad if I went in wearing real pants when I didn't have too. I also really need to get new jeans, because I have plenty of tall ones, but only one short pair (that I can wear with flip flops without them dragging on the ground too much) and that pair has some big holes in the inner thigh area. You can't really see the holes so I can still get away with them, but it's getting kind of ridiculous. Too bad they're soooo comfy and jeans shopping sucks.

Old times

Did people see this episode of Psych, with Kenan Thompson and Jaleel White (aka Steve Urkel)?  Awesomeness.  Hooray for flashbacks to elementary school (I'm ignoring the fact that Kenan Thompson is on SNL right now).  More people should watch Psych, there are some hilarious lines there.  And The Mentalist can STILL suck it.

About damn time

I'm finally getting sworn into the DC bar today!!  I submitted my application the second week of January, so it only took them nine months.  Sigh.  There's apparently two ceremonies today, one at 10 and one at 12, which I did not realize, and everyone I've talked to today is scheduled for the noon one, but I have the 10am one.  Which makes me a little sad, I was excited about meeting up with Andy and going together.  I also am really not excited about wasting time hearing some stupid speech.  I got spoiled with California, they don't require you to do any sort of ceremony at all--you just need a notary to sign a form.  It's kind of anticlimactic, but it saves sooooo much time.  On the plus side, I'll finally get to be on the website, finally get business cards, and finally get to take the asterisk off of my name.  Woo!  Lawyer in two jurisdictions, take that.

*calendar pages flip*

Tuesday was my one year work-iversary.  I can't decide if it went by fast or slow.  Like, I feel like I've been here forever already.  And yet, I can't believe that this is my second October here now.  Last year, it was all new--oh, this is what we do for Thanksgiving in the office, this is how into halloween the office gets, etc etc.  If that makes sense.  And now I have last year to compare it to, and that just feels weird.  So happy work-iversary to me!  And all my friends, too.  We celebrated here in DC with a pub crawl, which was pretty awesome.  12 bars for 12 months.  We took group photos at each bar and my friend Amy wants to turn it into a calendar.  I was the timekeeper, I had a stopwatch and everything.  And you bet your ass we kept on schedule!
I am not pleased with the fall.  First, it's freaking cold already.  And second, the sun now rises after I get up and sets around when I leave work.  And we haven't even hit fall back yet!  This sucks ass.  I need to move to the equator or something.

I know, I've been lazy again

This article disappoints me.  Based on the title I had much higher hopes.
I accidentally deleted the cool video I took of lightning from our plane!  I'm really bummed about that.
Football makes me sad this week =(
We did a pub crawl on Friday to celebrate our one year workiversary (which technically is tomorrow).  Twelve bars for twelve months!  And I kept us on time, as anyone who knows me would expect.  I had a stopwatch and everything.  And we were so good, we took group pictures at every bar!  I was looking through the pictures this morning (group one and other random pics) and I stop remembering taking them around bar eight or nine.
On Saturday morning we were walking Jamie (who is wearing his Cal bandanna that his Aunt Christine gave him) and we randomly ran into a group of Cal fans.  They wanted to say hi to Jamie, and then they realized that he had a Cal bandanna on and they got SO excited.  It was awesome.  I hope they tell their friends about it too.
I have a few more thoughts on new tv, I'll try to share them later.  It's been hard to keep up though, there's so many new shows and so little time!  Definitely better than the alternative, but still.  Also, new HIMYM = awesomeness!

Elizabeth > Jessica

Despite my meh feelings about Diablo Cody, I am ridiculously excited about this

It's my part and I'll cry if I want to

Lawyering is ruining my HIMYM Premiere Party! Laura and Andy are BOTH stuck at work. And now I am sad on one of the happiest days of the year =(

What a Tease

Ah Emmys, you disappoint me again.  You tease me with awesomeness like NPH hosting, Dr. Horrible winning a random creative emmy, and Kristin Chenoweth winning for Pushing Daisies, but then what happens?  You give best supporting actor in a comedy to f*@#!*% JON CRYER????  You are dead to me.  And Two and a Half Men, prepare to be destroyed.  No quarter.
On the plus side, NPH was awesome.  And the Dr. Horrible sketch, which I'd been tipped off about by Adam, was particularly excellent.  I'd even rewatched the original Dr. Horrible in anticipation so I wouldn't miss any of the jokes.  Oh Joss Whedon, you make my heart sing.
So tonight we have the premiere of HIMYM.  Even if you're not caught up, dvr it so once you've seen seasons 1-4 you can dive right into season 5.  And, in preparation, EW has listed their top 15 HIMYM episodes.  Feel free to discuss in the comments what you think about their selections.  I am pretty freaking excited.  Anyone who has seen season 1-4 is welcome to come over to watch with me =)

Good thing "The Pen Is Mightier" wasn't a category

Ha, Wolf Blitzer is apparently a moron.  The questions are still pretty sad, but good lord, he is almost as bad as the SNL parodies.  Watch it, it's very entertaining.
Also, I forgot that last night was the season premiere of Fringe!  Yay for hulu.  I wasn't that enthralled, but it's new tv so that alone makes me happy.

My Deep Thoughts

Look at me, posting right away! I'm trying to do it while everything is fresh in my mind. Not that my thoughts are so terribly deep, but you know, I do what I can. Oh, and maybe spoilers below, so watch out!

Parks and Recreation
EW said that this episode was funnier than all of the previous episodes, and I think they were right. One of my biggest problems is that the supporting cast is usually a lot more interesting than either Amy Poehler or Rashida Jones, and while tonight definitely suffered from a lack of supporting cast screen time, Leslie Knope was a lot better I think. And of course, penguins = adorable (the car seat thing cracked me up). Rashida Jones is ridiculously underused though, but maybe her dating Mark will help make her more interesting and give her better stories than, oh hey, I just randomly show up for two minutes at a time to look skeptical around Leslie. Overall, I say improvement over last mini-season, but it's still not really something I look forward to specifically. But I'll keep watching, see how it goes.

The Office
I just rewatched seasons 2 and 4, and am starting 5 now, so I've had a lot of The Office lately. Tonight's episode was ok, but I didn't see a whole lot of shining moments of hilarity. Yay for confirmation about Jam's baby, although if she's supposed to be four months along they better start strapping on the fake baby bump, but other than that there was nothing that blew me away tonight. I don't know, the whole fake rumor thing didn't really do it for me. Funny but not as funny as I'd hoped.

So this was a series premiere, and those are always so hard to do. You have to set up the whole premise, introduce a bunch of characters, all before really *knowing* the characters (not to sound too serious about it all). So, I think it's always a little tough to do a good series premiere. That said, I think this one was pretty decent. Joel McHale was, as expected, hilarious, with great delivery of snarky comments. Supporting cast seems good so far, and the little background song (which Yahoo answers tells me is "Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare" by Matt & Kim) is kind of hypnotic, so my high hopes are not dashed yet. I kind of love that he's an ex-lawyer, if only for the fact that the way he practiced law seems only to have involved a lot of fast talking and no sort of actual legal work. (Maybe it works that way in some places? That'd be nice.) I look forward to seeing what they're going to do in non-"introduce the whole show" episodes... ie every subsequent episode.

It's the most wonderful time of the year

For me, the fall tv season starts tonight, and I'm so excited!  Sure, Glee started back up, but we know how I feel about that show.  And The Biggest Loser started on Tuesday or something, and I love that show, but I always watch it on hulu a week after while I'm doing doc review, so that doesn't count either.  And unlike some people (ahem, Andy) I'm not that excited about the CW shows this year.  So the real premieres for me are tonight, and I'm ready to get this show on the road.  (sidenote--remember how the CW used to be the WB?  How quickly we get used to these changes.)  Anyway, tonight we have Parks and Recreation, which I was only lukewarm about before but I hear tonight has the funniest episode of it yet so here's hoping it starts to live up to its potential.  Then we have The Office which I am super duper excited about (I've been rewatching prior seasons so I'm so ready for some new episodes, and some Jam baby action), and the premiere of Community, which I have high hopes for since Joel McHale = the awesome.  I'll try to post my thoughts on the new episodes tomorrow, hopefully I won't get too distracted and forget!  No doubt they'll be fascinating reads.  I hope everyone has set their dvr for next Monday with the season premiere of HIMYM!  We're doing a premiere party here.  I've already colored in a blue french horn for decoration, no lie.  And of course the Emmys are on Sunday and we'll be watching NPH in all his glory there.  Lord, I am so busy, it's a wonder I have time to go to work and have my soul crushed.
Also, not to be callous, but please don't commit suicide at my metro stop.  It'll mess up my commute.  Just take pills or something, make it easy for everyone.

How is that possible?

September is half over already.  This is blowing my mind!

Monday morning recap

Finally!  I've been waiting all year to see who would win the Creative Emmy for Short-Form Live Action Entertainment Special Class Program.  Well, even if it has a bizarro name, at least it went to Dr. Horrible!  Woo!  Maybe a good omen for the "real" Emmys this weekend?  Speaking of week til the season 5 premiere of HIMYM!  If you're in DC and fully caught up on the show, premiere party at my place =)
Woo number 8!  Next week we're playing at Minnesota so it'll be a good test of our away game skills, so fingers crossed we don't crumble.
I dealt with the stupidest cashier ever at Target yesterday.  I was trying to buy a six-pack of boxed raisins, and the retard wanted to like open the package and scan each box individually.  Even though it says on the bottom "sold as unit."  Apparently she thought $1.97 was too cheap for six boxes, and thought that was supposed to be the price per box.  I wanted to murder her.  She was trying to call over a manager and stuff and I finally told her to just forget it, and she started giving me attitude about "wasting her time."  Well excuuuuuuse me that you're stupider than that box of raisins!  Makes me mad again just thinking about it.
I had three new people in my step class yesterday, and of course this week I have a particularly complicated combination.  I did my best to teach it, and kept it as simple as I could, but they were fairly lost.  But afterward one of the new ladies came up to me and thanked me for being so encouraging and doing my best to help them along when they didn't know what they were doing, so that made me feel good.  Of course, she said she might never come back, but I don't take that personally.

Good thing our game isn't til 5

I have to go into work today. I really shouldn't complain that much because in the almost-year I've been working here, this is the first time I've had to work on the weekend whereI couldn't just work from home. But there's nothing like getting an email at 8pm on Friday night saying hey, come in tomorrow at 9:30! Also, the two guys I'm working with are literally going at like half my speed, which is really pissing me off. We're seriously redacting names and job titles, so a monkey could do it, and I don't know why they're having deep thoughts (or whatever it is that makes them take so long) about these documents instead of just redacting and moving on! Maybe they'll be inspired to go faster today since it's Saturday. Blurg.

I missed my calling

I really wish I had a job that was related to pop culture. I don't know anything about the law, but I can tell you that Robert Urich and Faye Dunaway had a sitcom together that lasted a grand total of four episodes back in the early nineties. It seems to me like I'm in the wrong profession. Plus, my job is really boring. I got an email today saying that they have a project they need my help on tomorrow and this weekend. That project? Redaction. Yeah. I don't know the details yet, we're having a meeting about it tomorrow morning to get us started, but seriously, this is my job. Sigh. Entertainment Weekly, can I please come work for you? E!? TV Guide??

Musical television

So Ellen DeGeneres is going to be the newest judge on American Idol.  I generally love Ellen, I think she's hilarious, so that's a big point in her favor.  I'm guessing she's not really a music insider (or maybe she is and I just don't know it) so they're going for the "man of the people" voice on the judge's panel?  I'm not sure how I feel about that just because the voting is *actually* the voice of the people, and the judges are (as I see it) supposed to provide their insider's perspective as guidance somewhat.  But, seeing as how I'm almost physically pained from listening to Kara and Randy, I'll be happy to have Ellen there regardless of whether she knows a F sharp from a B flat (PS I have no idea what I just said).
Speaking of singing, I started watching Glee last night but only made it like ten minutes into the episode before I had something better to do, so my verdict on episode two will have to wait.  Probably until tonight.  Also, I'm rewatching Angel season four right now and (spoiler alert!) I forgot just how creepy it is that Cordy slept with Connor.  Seriously, ick.

I am not a douche!

And neither are my friends, so there!

Make new friends, but keep the old

My BFF from preschool/kindergarten just found me on Facebook!  It turns out she's in DC too now so we're getting together for lunch next week.  How random is that?  I haven't seen her since I was maybe eight, so we'll have a lot to catch up on.  Like, almost 20 years worth of, that is horrifying.
My friend Laura is bored at work so she's going through old blog posts of mine, and she's been IMing me about them.  My favorite comment:
Laura: dude, you blogged before blogging was cool
Yup, that's me!  Trendsetter.
Also, tonight is the premiere of Glee, finally.  I'm kind of hoping it crashes and burns, because all summer people have been flipping out about it based on one okay episode.  So either it better get a lot more interesting, or people need to recognize that it is not in fact the second coming.  I probably wouldn't watch tonight except there's no other new tv to entertain me, and new over-hyped Glee is better than nothing.

Hooray new tv season

I don't know if anyone other than me still watches Saturday Night Live, but apparently they fired Michaela Watson and Casey Wilson.  I'm not overly sad about either--I liked Watkins' Hoda Kotb but her "bitch pleeze" blogger pained me.  And Casey Wilson was just kind of there.

Internet at home once again! Comcast came on Thursday night (after almost not showing up, but luckily the technician was very nice and I sound very stern on the phone, because he was here til almost 9pm getting everything set up), but when he was setting up the internet the "wireless radio button" got turned off on my computer, and it's hidden so no one without a PhD in computer science can find it, so I was stuck for a while. Luckily my dad happens to have a PhD in computer science so he figured it out for me over the phone today, but since my computer is four years old and doesn't have all the fancy stuff that his computer has, it took him some time to figure out where they would have hidden the button. However it finally came about, though, I have internet! And I'm officially moved out of my old place, too. I went back today, got the last carload of stuff, cleaned a bit, and dropped off the keys. And I am SO glad to be done with it. I still have a bunch of crap sitting in my car, and my apartment still looks really disheveled, but the worst of it is over. And I am not moving again for a long time, I have had it with this business.

Also, GO BEARS! And please, don't play any more games at 10pm EST. I feel asleep during the fourth quarter, sad but true.

It's unanimous

Joss Whedon rocks.  In case you didn't know.

Make it to 20!

Mama Duggar is pregnant with number 19!  These people really fascinate me.  I mean, they're freaks, but they're so nice and polite!  I can't help but like them despite their extreme oddness.  And now I really do hope she ends up with one more, because 20 sounds so much better than 19.

Monday, August 31, 2009

Oh yeah

And Home Depot screwed up the three copies of my house key that I made for the new dog walker.  I had to give her my key instead since I need her to come starting today.  Just to continue the litany of complaints.

Ugh, it's been a weekend.  On Saturday the movers came (an hour and a half late) and it took a lot longer to move than I expected (they were there for six hours).  And Comcast was supposed to come between 2 and 5, and we were supposed to leave at 5:30 for a baseball game, so I called at like 4:30 when they still weren't there to see what the deal was.  When I called the phone system said "you have an appointment today between 2 and 5," so it knew what the deal was, but when I talked to a person she said hm, the computer says your appointment is Monday.  Well, I just talked to someone on Thursday and we confirmed the appointment was Saturday, and 20 minutes ago your computer system told me it was for today!  But apparently that doesn't matter.  So I had to make a new appointment, and the first one I could get (that wasn't completely in the middle of the day) was Thursday between 5 and 6.  Which means I'll have to leave work super early, and I can't even work from home while I wait since I don't have internet!  Sigh.  And the building people can't seem to get my name into the call box, inexplicably.  She keeps telling me, ok, go check now, and then I do and it's still the same person as before.
Today it's kind of cold outside!  It's in the 60s.  And unfortunately, my sweaters are all in my old apartment still (my lease there doesn't run out for another week).  So poor planning on my part.  I don't know if I'll get back there before this weekend so I might just be cold for a little while.
Jamie's citronella collar broke again and I'd been putting off calling about a replacement since this will be the third time I'm asking for one and I was afraid they'd think I was trying to scam them or something.  And that was dumb, because Jamie's all freaked out being in a new place and the collar isn't there to keep him quiet.  Not good!  I called this morning though and they're sending me a replacement ASAP (should be here tomorrow or possibly even today!) and they changed their supplier so hopefully this one won't break again in two months!
I'm still not sure what I'm going to do with my car now that I'm in DC...for now I brought it to my old place since I have parking there, but there's no parking at my new place and street parking is not going to work for me, so we'll see what happens.  I need to renew my registration in VA or register in DC, though, so I have to decide quickly.  And find the VA registration paperwork they mailed me a while ago, too...sigh.

I heart this growing world domination of his

Got back from Texas Monday was a fun trip, nice to ignore work for four whole days.  I'm going to have to make that a habit.  On our flight down we went right by a huge thunderstorm and I took a video of the lightning in the clouds, I'll post it here once I upload it.  It was pretty badass.
Moving Saturday!  Which means that this week is madness because I've done basically nothing to get ready.  But at least my current lease doesn't expire until September 7 so I'll have another week to get things in order if I need it.  Which I probably will, especially for cleaning the current place.
I need to find a new dog walker since my current company doesn't do my future neighborhood, and I have been emailing a few places.  Place number 2, we emailed last Wednesday, and then he never emailed me back to finalize a meeting time.  I even called him on Monday (we were supposed to meet Tuesday), and nothing, so yesterday morning I set up a meeting with another company.  Right after I did that, #2 finally emailed to say, oh, somehow I thought we'd settled this, I'll be by tonight at 9, text me to confirm.  So I texted him saying no need to meet, I hadn't heard from you so I made arrangements with another company.  And I got back a text saying, "Really?"  Um yes really, ignore me for six days, what do you think is going to happen?

Tired puppy

I tried a cycle class for the first time, and good lord, I'm so tired now! I did an intro class (that teaches the proper form and all, that, the bikes aren't regular stationary bikes, they wobble back and forth to make it harder) and then the regular class after that, and wow. I'm pretty sure that's what they used to do to prisoners at Guantanamo. I didn't even do half of the stuff the instructor told us to do (like standing or running and stuff like that), I just figured if I kept moving for the whole hour it counted as a win. But now I hope I can teach my class tomorrow! I still have to pack for Texas too. And all I want to do is curl up and go to sleep.

That didn't take long

I take what I said back. Brett Favre is way worse. Just go away already! I don't normally wish bodily harm on someone,* but why don't you break something and consider it God telling you to stay freaking retired already. Also, the Vikings? One of the reasons I used to respect you was because I thought you had a sense of team loyalty. I hope you go down in a fiery blaze of shame and suckitude.

*Well, ok, sometimes I do.

Tuesday, August 18, 2009

You sure this time?

These people are worse than Brett Favre!

I heart football!

This is hilarious and awesome.  We've got an imaginary best-case scenario for the Bears, and then what the worst-case scenario would look like.  My favorite part of the best-case scenario (other than the fact that we go to the national championship--although I still think that in the best-case scenario we wouldn't lose to Florida in triple overtime, we've shown we're good at winning those games): Cal rose to No. 2 in the rankings. Texas coach Mack Brown complained. According to an poll, 78 percent of the college football nation believed he should quit whining.  Clearly this guy knows from whence he speaks.

To steal one of Adam's things...what the hell is up with this weather??

Moving forward

Movers are coming Saturday August 29th! So exciting. I think the company I called might be a little shady, because the guy took my name and address and said ok, see you then! And nothing else. You'd think they'd want the "to" address, but I guess not.

Also, best friends from college Liz and Christine are driving cross-country to bring Liz's stuff to Boston (she's starting med school), and they're stopping in DC tonight! I'm so excited, the three of us haven't been together for a non-wedding reason since 2005. Literally four years. That is scary.

catching up

*Jamie had the doggie stomach flu on Sunday, and it was NOT pretty.  Luckily it seems to have been a 24 hour flu so by Monday night he was back to normal, but it was touch and go for a bit beforehand.  Poor puppy, he tried so hard not to make a mess, but there's only so much you can do when you're a dog.  Remind me never to have kids, this was enough work.
*I got a new apartment!  I was getting worried because I've had a hard time finding anything fitting my specific requirements, but I found a place, went to see it Wednesday, and now it's mine as of August 15!  It's really cute, in an old building (1913, older than my grandpa!) and it's like the opposite of my current, uber new and fancy place.  Which I like a lot too, but I'm looking forward to the charm of the historic building.  The only thing is it's smaller than my current place, so hopefully I get all my stuff to fit!  And by stuff, I mean clothes.  And shoes.  I'll post pictures when I can go back and take some (probably once I sign the lease next weekend).
*I met the biggest bitch on the escalator to the metro last night.  Here in DC, as in all civilized lands, you walk on the left and stand on the right.  People especially take it seriously here, and the stupid tourists frequently hold everyone up.  So usually you just say excuse me, and they slide right over.  But not this bitch.  Last night when Laura and I were going home there was a woman and her son on the escalator going down, son on the right, mom on the left.  The following exchange ensued:
Laura: Excuse me.
Bitch: You're in that much of a hurry?  (not moving)
Me: Walk on the left, stand on the right.  (as we walk down past her, going around her on the right)
Bitch: Well I don't care!
Reva: Well you'll just be rude then.  (over my shoulder since we were well past her)
Seriously, I've never had anyone talk back about following basic rules of etiquette.  My only comfort is knowing she'll burn in hell someday.
*I'm so tired of work right now.  I'm taking a long weekend in two weeks and going home to see my parents, and I'm just so excited to not be at the office for four days.  It's going to be great.

End of an era

I have mixed feelings about this.  On the one hand, Paula is fairly useless in terms of having helpful things to say.  On the other hand, with Randy and Kara around, she was actually the second-best judge.  I wonder if there will be any backlash against her for not feeling like a 30% raise and eight figure deal was enough for her?

Health conscious

I ran out of fruit at home so I didn't have any to bring in for lunch today.  So instead I got strawberry pop tarts from the vending machine.  I'm pretty sure that's the same thing, it even says on the package that it's a good source of 7 vitamins and minerals.

Deja vu

Hmm, sounds familiar, Boy Who Cried Retired.  You gonna change your mind again?  Notice how people care a lot less compared to the first time you retired.  Way to go out on top.

What up

A year ago today I was taking the bar exam.  I can't believe it's been that long already!  Man, did it suck.
Also, why do people slow down or stop walking completely when they're about to get off an escalator?  It's like the change to regular land is just too much for people to handle.  Meanwhile, the people behind you all have to stop too or fall on top of you.  I have a lot of complaints about escalator etiquette, I know, but I think they're all justified.
And person who posted on Craigslist who has not responded to my voicemail or email, I hate you.  Just in case you were wondering.

Fun times/Sad times

I went to the Brad Paisley concert last night that I won tickets for a couple of months ago, and it was, as expected, awesome. The only bad part was the fact that I had to drive to Frederick, MD during work hours to pick up the tickets, which I finally did on Thursday even though they've been there for a month. Even with no traffic it's an hour drive, so with traffic (although I did my best to avoid it) it ended up being a three hour, forty minute round trip. Almost four hours just to get something they could have left at will call for me if they weren't such pains in the asses! But nooooo, I have to go to the station between 8:30 and 5:30 on a weekday. Blurg to them. Luckily Brad is worth it. It was raining at the beginning of the show but even that wasn't so bad.

Also, I'd just like to note for the record and have been terribly kind to those I know taking the bar exam now and I have not sent one taunting email. Because I know the pain, and it's just cruel. And also because I'm a very, very good person.

Work convos

Reva (DC) [6:03 PM]:

so [partner] wanted me to write in a paragraph in this memo using an argument about "the logical fallacy of the contrary"

Reva (DC) [6:03 PM]:

only according to google, that doesn't exist

Reva (DC) [6:03 PM]:

so i just made something up

Nabeel (DC) [6:04 PM]:

LOL! that sounds like the logical fallacy of the contrary at work!

Yesterday I was talking to a woman who (a) hates any potato food, including french fries, and (b) thinks Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory are funnier than HIMYM.  It's like the devil himself walks among us.

Opinion poll

A girl in my step class found this book that's got a collection of Bollywood posters, and thought that this girl on the cover looks just like me. What do you think? It's my own face in question so I can't judge (because I think it looks nothing like me, but I'm told I'm wrong).

Who knew?

Apparently you can only listen to Pandora for free for 40 hours per month.  After that, you either have to pay 99 cents to listen unlimited for the rest of the month, or pay $36 to get a whole year of "premium" Pandora, with no ads and higher quality audio.  (a) I had no idea Pandora had a time maximum, I need to be bored at work less; and (b) their marketing people really need to change the way they present that, because 99 cents versus $36 sounds ridiculous.  It really should be say hey, for only $3 a month you can get unlimited premium Pandora*  (*must purchase one year subscription, total price $36).  See, not so hard, much more palatable.  You're welcome.
Also, the Federal Reserve knows my name.  I'm a baller.

Breaking News

HIMYM has been nominated for best comedy!  And the show is hosted by NPH...come on, it's gotta win.  I love 30 Rock, but it can have awards in some of its other 21 nominated categories.

This is me, skeptical

Berkeley is the number 10 meanest city in terms of treatment of homeless people??  Ha.  They clearly have never been there.

Good idea/bad idea

The MTV movie awards isn't something I watch a lot, but I happened to catch some of the show hosted by Russell Brand, and he sucked.  Really sucked.  So why exactly is he hosting again??  Calling NPH...

Pet peeve # 31

People who are STILL wearing those stupid LiveStrong bracelets drive me nuts.  They annoyed me enough when they were popular like seven years ago, but still wearing them every day?  For the love of God, why??

Monday, July 13, 2009

Last night I dreamed I was at a Laker game hanging out with Derek Fisher and some other random players (I think I just made them up for my dream because I didn't recognize them) in a room "backstage" before the game.  I was really excited because we were going to get to hang out after the game too and I was going to get a picture with Fish then, and I have no idea why I couldn't have done it before the game too, but my hair was all poofy and crazy since I hadn't straightened it yet and so when they went out to play the game I asked the make-up artist (because in my dream, the bball players had hair and make-up) if I could borrow their flat iron.  She said sure, and asked if I wanted a cut, too.  She said she always gives a trim before she uses the flat iron.  So I said ok, and then I tried to straighten my hair, but after I finished it I realized that (a) she cut my hair short, so it was between my shoulder and chin length, and (b) she'd shaved off part of my hair in the middle of each side of my head!  It was like I had a racing stripe on the right, and an uneven ditch of hair on the left.  It was a ridiculous disaster and I was so upset.  Of course.  And my dream ended before I could get back to hanging out with the Lakers, which was sad.
So prompted by my dream this morning (and having Sports Center on in the background as I straightened my hair for reals this morning), I went to and apparently they show full eps of PTI online, but only for insiders.  And so, after years of getting free Cal preseason reports from Matt, I think I have to break down and actually join, because if I was able to actually watch PTI on my computer rather than have to dvr it (which I for sure would never keep up with), I think it'd be worth it.  If you do the two year membership it's only $2.50 a month, plus you get ESPN the magazine.  The only downside is that you have to pay all $60 up front, and it would feel like so much cheaper if I just saw a bunch of charges for $2.50.

Because planning is bad?

Why does no one plan ahead on Craig's List? My lease is up September 7, and I'd kind of like to know where I'll be moving to, but everyone wants a tenant NOW. Not in a month or two (and I'd be willing to sign a lease for August 15 so I could kind of gradually move over). I don't understand why everyone is against doing things with a little bit of notice. I'm trying to force myself not to look at CL until August so I won't get insanely frustrated, but I don't like not knowing where I'm moving to. Hmph.

I'm rewatching Angel Season 2 right now. Such a good show, makes me happy. Well, sad they canceled it long before they should of, but happy that it existed at least for a while. Better to have loved and lost, and all that.

Thursday, July 09, 2009

I can't set my dvr if you don't tell me about these things ahead of time

I told you, he's taking over the world.  And I like it!

Not to make light of a death, but...

This sounds like an episode from Pushing Daisies.  Which, btw, rocked.  And no doubt that's why it was canceled, because people are stupid and don't get quirky.

I'd really prefer half off, thanks

I'm browsing gemstone jewelry on (work is boring), and most everything is buy one, get one free.  Which is fine for shirts or random stuff like that, but semiprecious jewelry?  I can imagine talking myself into earrings that are half off, but getting two pairs just seems over the top, even if it is for the price of one.

Tuesday, July 07, 2009

I just have to say

that I don't give a crap that Michael Jackson died.  Was it surprising?  Sure.  Am I sad that a weirdo child molester who had some fun songs back in the day is no longer around to be tabloid fodder?  Not particularly.  People need to stop with this over-the-top tribute crap and just get on with it.

Side job

I'm teaching FOUR aerobics classes this week!  I'm going to be crazy exercise girl, without even meaning to.  I volunteered to sub a kickboxing class tonight (well, I was asked a while back and agreed to do it), and then last night I got trapped into subbing a step class for tomorrow (but not my usual class, so I have to come up with different choreography for it), so that'll be Sunday-Monday-Tuesday-Thursday teaching.  At least hopefully I'll feel in good shape this weekend!  I'm still kind of tired of working out, but I feel good when I'm doing it at least, so I guess it's just me wanting to be lazy.  I didn't want to teach three days in a row, especially since two of the three are classes I need to spend more time prepping for, but hopefully it'll keep me in the good graces of the head lady.

Cool thing about Notre Dame? The squirrels there are so tame, you can literally feed them by hand. Here is a squirrel (Bob, in case you were wondering) eating part of a granola bar from my hand. Also, fyi, squirrels love Fiber One granola bars. But then again, who doesn't. They're delicious.

Time to go?

This might be one of the slowest moving days in the history of the earth.  How is it not even 3pm yet???

He is full of awesomeness

Woo!  He should just be president, too.  While we're giving him jobs.

Wednesday, July 01, 2009

Almost a third of Mississippi adults are obese.  A third!

How is it July already?? 2009 is half over. Scary.

The wedding was fun--Notre Dame is a pretty campus, and we had perfect weather, so thus far I approve of the midwest. I mean, as long as the weather looks like that. So I'm guessing I approve for like four months out of the year, max. Chicago was neat too, I miss being near the ocean (or a super huge lake would do).

I've had Sweet Caroline stuck in my head for days. Stupid wedding reception music!

I miss television. Not that I don't have one, like some crazies, but there's so little new on now, it's sad. I got Angel seasons 2-4 on DVD because I found them cheap (and watched 1 on Hulu months ago) so maybe I'll start rewatching those to keep myself entertained.

Hearing Adam talk about the bar exam makes me realize (a) I seriously cannot believe how much work I did for it last summer, and (b) how overjoyed I am never to be doing that again.

This week is only three days long for me, between being out Monday for the wedding and Friday for the 4th of July...and yet it seems crazy long already. I woke up today very sad it wasn't Thursday.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this, but when my lease is up I'm moving into DC proper, so I'm excited about that! I like my apartment here, but I'm bored with it. Ready to see what something new will look like. And if I could find someplace with a yard of sorts that would be the best thing ever, because not walking Jamie in the mornings (especially when the weather is awful) would be the best thing ever.

Straightening my hair takes forever. If I were a boy (cue music) I'd have so much extra free time.

I've only been working for nine months. It feels so much longer.

Four-day weekend!

I get to at two more states to my "states I've been to" list this weekend. I'm going to Notre Dame for a wedding (bf's college friend...for once I'll be just a guest instead of a bridesmaid!), so we're flying into Chicago, which I've never been to before, and driving to South Bend, IN. Other than landing in O'Hare (which doesn't count, according to my rules), I've always kind of skipped over the middle of the country. No offense to the middle, but I've never had any reason to go there. So I'll finally get to see places like lovely Gary, Indiana...Try to contain yourselves as you wait for the pictures. See, you can't. I knew it.

Monday, June 22, 2009

The video screens in the metro stations say that there's a delay on the red line because a train is having "mechanical difficulties."  That's a funny way of describing it.  But I guess reading "four dead" is a little intimidating when you're about to get on the train yourself.

Time grows short

Yesterday was the first day of summer, and while that makes me really happy (yay summer!), I can't help but think of it in terms of the days growing shorter.  Even though it's super nice outside and sunny, I still know that every day we're losing a minute or so.  It's the opposite of the first day of winter, where it's freezing and awful but at least I know the days are getting a teeny bit longer.  Damn psyching myself out.

Thursday, June 18, 2009

Sun, come back!

I clearly jinxed myself with the whole "it's not so bad getting up early" post, because the last few days it's been cloudy and icky outside, so I feel like I'm getting out of bed in the middle of the night, and I'm very not happy. I just want to curl up under the covers for another few hours!

Also, why is it socially acceptable to whistle randomly in public? If someone was walking down the hallway singing we'd call them freaks (well, I would at least). So why is it ok to whistle and annoy everyone? Really, I'm just all messed up because of that office neighbor I have who is always whistling and annoying the crap out of me, because now I can't hear ANYONE do it without wanting to murder them. But now that I notice it more than before, I can't help but wonder why it's not considered weird/rude in the first place.

Safety first!

I found a girl's wallet and keys this weekend when we were out on the town, and I was trying to track her down to return it, but her phone number wasn't on any of the cards in her wallet.  She did have a Bally Total Fitness membership card, though, so I called them up and told them the situation and asked if I could get her phone number.  I figured they'd say no for security reasons and just take my number and contact her on their own, but nope, I got two phone numbers and an email address!  So lesson there is, Bally will help you stalk people.  It's a good thing I'm an honest person!  And a bad thing that I'm a member there, too.

Glad to hear it?

Me (exiting elevator): Have a good day!
Man in elevator: I certainly will.
Is that not kind of weird?  No "thanks, you too."  And he was so definitive that he is, indeed, certainly going to have a good day today!  I just found that odd.

Early riser

Since the end of April I've been getting into the office around 8 and staying til around 7 most days, trying to bill more hours.  And it's not so bad, but I think that's entirely because the sun is up that whole time.  It rises around 5:45 and sets around 8:30, so I don't feel like I'm at work in the middle of the night.  It's been great for billing, because I can do 10 or 11 hours a day and not feel like I'm really killing myself.  This is all going to go to hell once we fall back, though, I can tell.  Getting up at 6:30 and it not getting light until I'm in the office already is not going to work.  I hate winter -- it's June and I'm already preparing myself for how much I hate it!  But especially the long nights, that might be even worse than the cold weather.  Which is saying something.

Apparently embed doesn't work when I email posts. So just click the link below to watch the video until I can fix it at home tonight. It's, as I said, the best thing ever. Mostly if you watched SBTB, granted, but still.

UPDATE: Fixed!

It's "shows I used to love as a kid" day!

This is the best thing ever.
I heart SBTB! And apparently the reunion show is gaining momentum, whee.

Mystery solved

I found Judy Winslow!

Musical extravaganzas

I didn't see the Tony's last night (I was watching basketball -- 2-0, woo!) but apparently this was the best part.  NPH, I heart you.  And apparently he's going to be in two new movies!  But one of them has Vanessa Hudgens, so that doesn't really count.

Yay Dennis Quaid

When I was little I loved the movie Undercover Blues. I discovered that it was part of Netflix's "view instantly" selection, and I was really excited, but I was also worried that I'd rewatch it and discover that my childhood view was all messed up, and really the movie sucked. But, I was happy to see that it still is, in fact, a funny movie. Hooray for childhood memories not letting you down!

Also, go Lakers =)

I too saw Up last weekend (although I'm still a 25 year-old), and yes, it is awesome. And while Adam didn't mention this in his post about it, be sure to bring a tissue, if you have any sort of heart. Especially in the opening montage, it's like impossible not to cry. Granted, it's not terribly hard to make me cry, but who can mock me for crying at commercials after seeing this one. But I digress. Ignore any skepticism you have about how entertaining an old man flying in a house lifted by balloons could be, and go see the movie. I think even my brother will like it, and us agreeing on a movie is practically a sign of the end times.

Hope never dies

Football preview time:
Year after year, Cal is a trendy choice to break through and finally reach a new level of success under head coach Jeff Tedford, like winning the Pac-10 or playing in a BCS bowl game. But year after year the Bears come up a little short, and while it's a stretch to say Cal has been disappointing, it hasn't been able to bust through the ceiling. Well, this year's edition has enough talent to end USC's stranglehold on the conference.  Honest.  Really.
Please, let it be so!

Yay for quirky

Pushing Daisies was back on this weekend to show its final three episodes ever, and it just reminded me what a cute, quirky show it is.  Sadness of my heart that it's going away forever soon!  But thank goodness my dvr was paying attention and recorded it for me.  Unlike the way it let me down when the show 17 Kids and Counting became 18 Kids and Counting and my dvr never recorded another episode.  =(

I said I would do it...

...and I did it! Behold the glory that is me posing with the scenery in Reva, Virginia:

And yes, those are the ONLY things to see in Reva, VA. Everything else is just random houses. It's pretty scenery, but not exactly a bustling metropolis. Or a bustling village. But whatever, it's got my name!

Substitute teacher

The woman who teaches the 9am Saturday step class (which I have never made it to, for obvious reasons) hurt her knee and can't teach tomorrow, so I told her I'd sub for her. I didn't want to, because she's apparently got this big following who loves her and I'm feeling like I totally suck right now, but she didn't have anyone else to do it so I figured I should step up. I'm thinking that this is my one chance to get some new people so I'm hoping to make tomorrow extra good so I can entice people to my class. Step class has always been my fun hobby but lately it's been feeling like something I *have* to do, which sucks. Here's hoping tomorrow is the start of my turnaround!

I've been saying it for a long time, and now Fran Tarkenton agrees with me!

Catching up

Ok, a lot of this is going to be way old, but I'm just going to say it because I've been meaning to forever:

*Justin Timberlake is crazy good on SNL. And he doesn't take himself too seriously, which is awesome. Here are my two favorites from when he hosted a couple of weeks ago.

*What is the big deal about Glee? I was rather unimpressed. I was expecting witty dialogue and sarcastic barbs, but instead I got a lame cover of Journey (for the how many millionth time do we hear that song? If it's not 2am in a bar, no thank you) and a sappy story about the same archetypical characters as always. It's not that it was bad, but I don't get the hype.

*I'm catching up on 24 (last two hours to go!), and in the second to last episode, they have a guy taking the metro, and they make up names of metro stations. WTF? Is there something copyrighted about metro stations that they couldn't get the rights to, because otherwise, why do something so glaringly wrong when the whole thing about the series is how it happens in real time? (And yes, in my mind, real time = like real life.)

*Work has slowed down some, but I've been getting in early (8am, plus or minus) every day, which actually makes it much easier to bill 10-12 hours a day. I'm not a morning person, but I can't stay past like 7 or 7:30 on a regular basis (poor Jamie stuck at home, plus I just don't like it), so I'd rather get up at the crack of dawn to get my hours in. It's been working pretty well so far, although I have yet to figure out how to get myself to bed earlier to make up for getting up earlier.

Time flies

Today is the first day of the summer program here at work.  I can't believe it's been two years since I was a summer!  Even though the budget is dramatically smaller than when I was a summer, I'm still jealous of the fun times they'll be having.  Although we didn't have to worry about getting offers, whereas I'm sure they're going to be doing a lot of that this summer.  Amazing how much time has passed, though.

Good luck with that

Seriously?  Buildings will be burned down before this is ever allowed to happen.

Bye bye season 8

Well, I think everyone was shocked when they announced the winner of Idol last night.  I personally was shocked, but happy!  And mad props to Andy for picking out Kris back during the Hollywood week process!  (Or maybe even earlier, I'm not sure.)  And a big ha! to the judges, who think they can predict the show and guide it exactly where they want it to go.

My good luck

Ok, a week plus late, but here is the story I've been meaning to tell for a while.  Last Tuesday I was going to a deposition for my pro bono client (my first depo!), which was in Nowheresville*, MD.  I was driving myself and so of course I had my directions, and they told me to get on the 395N (yes, "the" 395N) and stay on it until I hit the SW freeway, and then take that into MD.  So I took the 395 and I kept looking for signs for the SW freeway, but I didn't see anything, so I stayed and stayed until finally the freeway ended and I was on NY Avenue heading north-east instead of south-east of DC.  My maps were not the best thing ever, but I finally figured out that if I hit Pennsylvania Ave SE I'd be going in the right direction...but there's no direct route between NY Ave and PA Ave.  So I meandered my way down, going past Union Station and all these random places, time passing by, until I *finally* got to stupid Pennsylvania, about a half hour later than I should have been.  At this point I finally figure out I'm on the right track, and I was emailing the people I was meeting to tell them I was on my way but running late (which I knew I would be, so I left early to try to combat this, but apparently not early enough).  Oh, and the reason why I never found the SW freeway is that it's ALSO called the 295.  And while google maps says the SW freeway, the actual signs only say 295.  So, screw all of you.
So anyway I'm driving SE finally in the right direction, and I'm stopped at a stoplight (because on the road to Nowheresville, MD, freeways have stoplights) and listening to the radio (which I never do anymore because I mostly just listen in the car, and I rarely drive) and the station I'm on is talking about the Brad Paisley concert that's coming up here in July, for which tickets were going on sale last Friday.  Brad Paisley is like my favorite guy ever and I've been trying to see him in concert for literally years, but he's always in town right when I'm not, somehow.  I'd been planning on going to the concert here in July for months, just been waiting for the tickets to go on sale, but as I'm sitting at the light the radio dj says that he's got a trivia question for us, and if we get it right, we get tickets to the concert before we can buy them!  Oh yes, you see where I'm going with this.
He gives out the trivia question (what song did Brad win the 2009 grammy for best country instrumental for?), and I had no idea what the answer was, but I typed the number for the station into my phone (just didn't dial), then picked up my blackberry and said a quick prayer to the Verizon gods, and googled for the answer.  And what do you know but the first hit gave me the answer!  So I called in and managed to get through and tell him the answer (in case you're curious, it's "Cluster Pluck"), and boom, I have tickets.  So hooray for being late to the depo because I probably still wouldn't have been in the car otherwise!  And now I'm going to the Brad Paisley concert and I'm ridiculously excited.  It's gonna be legen-wait for it-dary.  I counted and this is actually the fifth concert I've gotten tickets for free from a radio station, four of the five coming from call-in contests.  I guess I've got a bit of a talent for it, but it's been a while since I've won anything, so it's good to see my muscles haven't atrophied *too* much.
*I had a ruder name for it before but I'm trying to be polite in this public forum.

Idol reactions

No liveblogging, but a few thoughts:
*I still think Kris' voice just straight-up (now tell me!) sounds better than Adam's.  Adam still makes me wince because half the time he's all screechy.  I just don't get it.
*Why are the judges yelling at Kris about the song he did when Simon Fuller chose it?  The only song he actually chose himself is the one they all loved.  So, maybe someone should mention that?
*All of the judges' comments after Kris' last song sounded like them saying "you should be really proud of coming in second."  Or is it just me?
*I don't think it really matters at this point who wins--coming in first doesn't mean you're going to be successful, and as long as you get the exposure from being on the show, you can still do really well.  So, although I think Kris is better, I won't really mind if/when Adam wins.  Except I'd love it if Kris won, as a reminder to the judges that their opinions only matter so much, so maybe they can't guide someone to the title after all.
*"We're not really competing against each other.  Adam and I just wanted to come out and put on a good show" (paraphrasing).  Awwww.

I know I still have to do my story about Tuesday morning, but I am really tired now and have been pretty busy at work (see post below), so I haven't had time yet. I'd just like to say that I am both surprised and thrilled that Kris kicked Danny's ass off Idol! Hooray for actual talent winning out over The Machine. I get that Adam is going to win next week, but I'm pretty stoked for Kris making it to second. Andy, you sure know how to pick them!

Cranky pants

I've been really busy at work the last few weeks and today I finally had something that came up last-minute that kept me from my step class. I had to cancel with like a half hour notice and the gym lady got all mad at me (even though when she convinced me to teach at lunch she said it's ok if this kind of thing happens) and I had a cranky phone call AND email from her. And even though this is the first time it's happened in like seven months, and it was beyond my control, I feel bad about it. I feel like she already thinks I suck because my class size has gone down the last few months, and now this, so I feel like I'm going to get fired or something. I hate feeling like I suck.

Top 3

I know I've been a blogging nightmare lately, I'm sorry. But don't worry, I won't abandon you on this, the penultimate Idol episode! I've got my dinner in front of my and my laptop to the side, and I'm ready for action. I'm appalled that Danny is still in but pleasantly surprised that Kris is.

Apparently this is the first ever all-male top 3. I don't care because it's all dudes, I care because Allison should be there but she isn't. Stupid judges paving the way for Danny. Not that I'm bitter!

Hm, Paula picked a song by Terence Trent D'Arby, Dance Little Sister, for Danny. I loved the song Wishing Well, but I don't think I know this one. Buuuut from the start of it I'm not loving it. Why is he shouting so much? Does he think the mic isn't working? And does Paula ever not dance? I say this is typical Danny--too much shouting, and really a boring song. Not to steal something from Simon, but I won't remember the song at all in five minutes. "I'm a choreographer and I think you did really good." Oh good, so this is a dance competition now. Ha, Simon just mentioned that. He said the vocals were good, though, so we differ there.

Ok, Kara and Randy are picking the song together for Kris. Maybe Kara being involved will help, because I think Randy sucks. Hmm, Apologize by One Republic. This could be good. I do so love the sound of Kris' voice. Like, Adam can sing on key and all that jazz, but I like just hearing Kris' voice. He's changed it around some here and there, I wonder if it's enough to qualify as "artistry." I always like it when the idols play an instrument, too. Oops, I guess it's not artistry. Not enough chances. How come he's punished for not taking more chances now when he's done it so often, while Danny is rewarded for being boring and unoriginal every week? "Competent" is not a good compliment. Sigh. But Simon is blaming Kara and Randy for not pulling their weight and telling Kris what to do with the arrangement, so that's something? I do agree that him doing this song with the guitar acoustic would have been amazing, though.

Simon picked Adam's song, of course. Simon's the best so he picks the song for the favorite. One by U2--Simon had to talk to Bono personally to get permission for it. That's kind of cool. I just noticed that Adam kind of has elf ears. Maybe it's just the angle he's at, but he looks definitely elfin. Oh seriously, hands waving side to side? Come on. And Lord, can Adam ever not screech? I know it's "amazing" or something, but it annoys the crap out of me. That's the thing--Kris' voice makes me feel like it's giving me a hug or something, while Adam's makes me wince a bit. Everyone loves it, shocker.

Idol Gives Back? Fast forward.

Danny round two. No Clive Davis, this time the idols pick. What is it gonna be, Danny? You Are So Beautiful. I'm already bored. I don't even have anything else to say because I was looking up Terence Trent D'Arby on wikipedia and did you know he changed his name to Sananda Maitrey after a dream? So weird. Anyway, Kara says Danny was "stunning." Really? It sounded stupid to me. But Simon says it was a "vocal master class." Sorry Kris, you're gonna get screwed here.

Speaking of, here we are with song number two for Kris! He's singing Heartless by Kanye West. Innnteresting. Oh wow, him and the guitar. Well, this explains why he didn't do this for Apologize. And if the judges don't lavish him with praise, they are the worst contest-fixers ever. This is fantastic. Randy likes it better than the original--good! Kara says why didn't you do this for Apologize!! Well, because doing it twice would be retarded? Kara is flipping for it though, good. Paula was underwhelming but still positive. Simon says he'd written Kris out of the competition after song 1, but after this, he takes it back. GOOD!!! Has Danny every done anything a tenth that original or awesome? Um, no. Not even close.

Ok, last song of the night. Adam, what's it going to be? Aerosmith, Cryin'. This will be a lot better than Danny doing Aerosmith, I can say that without hearing a note. At least this song fits with Adam's weird screechy thing, it makes me wince a little less than normal. I'm sure the judges will love it, as always. You deserve to be in the finals, you're a God among men, etc etc.

Ok, well obviously Adam is in the finals. I (spoiler alert!) think Kris deserves to be there too about ten million times more than Danny does. Will justice prevail? Are the voters that smart? In the end, I don't think it'll matter, Kris'll get a record deal either way. But Danny making it to the finals when he's so smarmy (Laura!) is just wrong.

Oh, and I have a good story from this morning but it'll have to wait a bit. So, try not to die of anticipation!

It's me!

How did I not know that I'm a city??  I'm so going there.  And taking pictures in front of every sign with my name on it.
